Tiferes, the center for wholesale quality STa"M, was first established as a small company that manufactured quality tefillin. Its high standards of quality and honesty quickly rated it the preferred choice for tefillin purchases. Later, Tiferes grew to become the worldwide STa"M center.
Rabbi Bentzion Meir, manager of Tiferes, is a close disciple of Rav Nissim Karelitz Shlit"a. He studied in top yeshivahs and later, in the kollel of Rav Yisraelson Shlit"a, son-in-law of Rav Elyashiv zt"l and in the Chazon Ish kollel in Bnei Brak for many years.
Rabbi Meir gained initial experience in the world of STa"M by writing and checking STa"M products in between study sessions. He accumulated vast knowledge of the halachos of STa"M and practical know-how, and thus earned certification from the Mishmeres STa"M institute to write and check STa"M products. Rav Nissim Karelitz and Rav Avraham Yisrael Rubin attested that he is qualified to work in sofrus.
Through his work, Rabbi Meir learned of the problems that exist in the STa"M field, especially outside of Israel. There, most STa"M products are imported from Israel and are oftentimes written by unqualified sofrim and exorbitantly priced. The clients' ignorance is duly taken advantage of.
Rabbi Meir also learned that many retailers do not check for quality and simply seek the cheapest merchandise. Consequently, the products they sell are of inferior quality or inadvertently even unkosher.
Rabbi Meir has thus made it his mission to reflect transparency in the STa"M market. He wants clients to be able to choose a G-d fearing sofer, the style of writing he prefers, and ensure that these requirements are duly met and he is paying a fair fee for the product. Supplying the Jewish world with quality STa"M is the overarching goal Rabbi Meir constantly strives to meet.
Rabbi Meir also seeks to inform the general public of the common halachos involved in purchasing STa"M, and has thus authored a succinct booklet of guidelines for purchasing mehudar tefillin. Additionally, he has compiled a book of halachic responsa that were issued by famous poskim for free distribution to STa"M writers and suppliers. This book has been reviewed by great poskim, including Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky Shlit"a , who was notably impressed.
